Here at Ladders.co.uk, we have a number of step ladders of various specifications, suitable for use on most DIY jobs. Our step ladders are certified to EN14183, EN131 or BS2037 Class 1 meaning that whatever the job you wish to carry out, we have a suitable product for you. Our extensive range come with various tread and class options and are available in aluminium, fiberglass or timber. Some of these come with the option of handrails to help with confidence and security whilst using the product.
Generally this range falls into one of two categories, platform and swing back, also known as builders step ladders or painters steps. As the name suggests, ‘platform step’ have a large platform at the top and make working at height comfortable and safe. Swing backs do not feature a platform at the top and are very popular with builders and painters, who need to move frequently and need to work at a range of heights. Painters steps are light and easy to transport will fit into the back of a van. We also offer a range of fibreglass options, suitable for use where electrical conductivity of aluminium is a problem, such as for electricians. Fibreglass options are available in both platform and swing back versions, as their aluminium equivalent.
The size can often cause a bit of confusion. The number of treads or steps that one has includes the top tread or platform, so for example a 6 tread platform, has 5 treads and the platform at the top, while a 6 tread swing back has 5 treads that can be stood on plus the very top of the ladder. All of our products show the number of treads and the top-tread height so you can work out which will be most suitable for the space you have. The platform option will also have a top rail above the platform that you can hold onto for extra stability. British standards dictate the height of the top rail above the platform, meaning that by purchasing an EN131 or BS2037 Class 1 you can be sure of a strong, secure ladder that will last. Features to look for on for a high quality step ladder are large platform and tread size and the construction of better quality product typically features box section back legs, for increased stability.

I wasn't sure which product to choose and called in to get some advice. I wanted either Class 1 or EN131 but wasn't sure of the main differences. I opted for Class 1 in the end and the ladder I have is really sturdy and strong. I've had rickety steps in the past but these are excellent.
